National Biomanufacturing Centre

VISION

The National Biomanufacturing Centre is set to become Europe’s leading biopharmaceutical design centre. With the capability to develop and manufacture a wide variety of novel biopharmaceutical medicines for early phase clinical trials, the NBC works with biotech companies or academic groups to bring new medicines from the research laboratory into the clinic.

“The National Biomanufacturing Facility would carry out the initial manufacture of biopharmaceuticals which could then be used in early trials. It would plug an essential gap that currently exists to speed up transfer from research to commercial exploitation.”

Stephen Byers, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry,
March 2001

The National Biomanufacturing Centre (NBC), based in Speke near Liverpool, is owned by the Northwest Regional Development Agency and operated by Eden Biodesign Ltd. It is funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency, the European Regional Development Fund and the UK Government Department of Trade and Industry. The Centre works closely with the DTI funded Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN), Bioprocess UK, funded through the DTI Technology Programme and managed by the BioIndustry Association (BIA). Bioprocess UK is dedicated to the advancement of the bioprocessing sector in the UK and provides networking and information exchange for the UK’s bioprocessing community.
