The National Biomanufacturing Centre (NBC) is strategically located on the prestigious Estuary Commerce Park in Speke, Liverpool. Speke is a natural choice for locating the NBC because of the area’s strong traditions in biomanufacturing. This allows the NBC to build on the concentration of know–how, skills base and experience in biomanufacturing that is unrivalled in the UK.

The History of Biomanufacturing in Speke, Liverpool

1945 Penicillin The Distillers plant at Speke was one of the first two factories in Europe to produce penicillin by fermentation.
1981 Insulin Eli Lilly’s Speke site is where the world’s first biologic - insulin - was produced in commercial quantities.
1985 Human Growth Hormone Eli Lilly’s Speke site is now a major producer of Human Growth Hormone.
2002 Fluvirin Novartis’ Speke site (previously Evans Vaccines and Chiron) is the sole manufacturing site for Fluvirin™, one of the world’s largest selling influenza vaccines.
2005 FluMist MedImmune, market supply of FluMist™ from its Speke facility.
